Unlike the individual portraits in Novel Blooms, the floral portraits in Ruffled Realities join together to create a shared bloom. Each retains its own character while becoming part of something larger. The resulting sculpture becomes a collective portrait, reflecting the ways our lives intertwine through family, community, and the shared experiences that shape us all.

Each sculpture begins with newspaper pages containing real headlines and moments from our collective history. The paper is cut, layered, and transformed into sculptural floral forms, reshaping stories of uncertainty, celebration, hardship, and hope into a collective portrait of resilience. The headlines themselves often disappear beneath layers of encaustic, yet their presence remains, much like the events that continue to influence us long after they have passed.

By transforming newspapers into a shared bloom, I explore the possibility that beauty and renewal can emerge from even the most difficult realities. Words become history, texture, and form, reminding us that while our individual stories are unique, they are forever intertwined with the larger story we write together.
