Inherited Light: A Dialogue with My Father
A Contemporary Homage to Polaroid Manipulation
"Inherited Light: A Dialogue with My Father" is a deeply personal exploration that pays homage to my father’s unique artistry with Polaroid photography. Inspired by his innovative techniques using an old SX70 Polaroid camera and dental tools, I set out to honor his creative legacy while infusing my own artistic vision into the process.
Cyanotypes became my primary medium for this series, merging the photographic qualities of the process with my profound love for botanicals and florals. The deliberate use of plants and various solutions during exposure introduced an element of unpredictability and organic beauty to the cyanotype base. This intentional choice echoes my father’s manipulation of developing Polaroids, transforming photographs into painterly compositions.
The series features mixed media works, each beginning as a cyanotype meticulously crafted with botanical influence. These prints, sized at 4.25 x 3.5 inches to evoke the nostalgia of traditional Polaroid dimensions, bridge the past and present by combining a sense of familiarity with a contemporary twist.
To replicate the tactile manipulation that defined my father’s original Polaroid pieces, I incorporated encaustics and additional mediums. This fusion amplifies the multidimensional nature of the artwork, transforming each piece into a unique exploration of the intersection between photography and mixed media.
"Inherited Light: A Dialogue with My Father" is not merely a replication of his work but a personal journey that intertwines generational artistry. By fusing cyanotype, encaustic, and mixed media, this series invites viewers to experience botanical beauty and artistic innovation through a lens that simultaneously honors and reimagines the iconic Polaroid photograph.
